Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral skin infection. It can be transmitted by direct contact. It is more common in children, but can occur at any age.

What Causes Molluscum Contagiosum?

Molluscum contagiosum is caused by a virus (Poxvirus) that is passed through close contact with an infected person or through shared objects.

What are the Symptoms of Molluscum Contagiosum?

The lesions are usually skin-colored, small, raised, hemispherical or small dome-shaped. They are most characterized by a central depression containing a cheesy plug. A person may have only one or a few lesions or many lesions.

How is Molluscum Contagiosum Diagnosed?

There is usually no need for a diagnostic test and the rash is easily recognized by the physician.

How can Molluscum Contagiosum be treated?

Although the rashes may disappear spontaneously over time, the treatment method depends on the age of the patient and the extent of the disease. Molloscum lesions can be treated with ablative laser at certain intervals until the rashes disappear.
